Richard Hickox
Sadly, Richard Hickox died on 23rd November 2008, aged 60.
Richard Hickox was Music Director of Opera Australia (Sydney). From 2000-2006 he was Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, before becoming Conductor Emeritus. He founded the City of London Sinfonia in 1971 of which he was Music Director and he was also Associate Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Emeritus of the Northern Sinfonia, and co-founder of Collegium Musicum 90.
He regularly conducted the major UK orchestras, including the London Symphony in a number of semi-staged operas; he gave the first ever complete cycle of Vaughan Williams symphonies in London with the Bournemouth Symphony, and conducted series of Elgar, Walton and Britten with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
His phenomenal success in the recording studio resulted in nearly 300 recordings, including the Britten operas with the City of London Sinfonia (Chandos Records) and numerous recordings with the London Symphony and BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Richard Hickox was awarded a CBE in 2002, and received many other awards including two Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, a Grammy and four Gramophone Awards, the first ever Sir Charles Groves Award, the Evening Standard Opera Award, and the Association of British Orchestras award.
